    Lesson 65

    Dialogue

    I. Revision

    1. Check the homework exercises.

    2. Draw a simple map of China on the blackboard. Ask:

    Where’s Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou?

    How far is it from Beijing to Shanghai?

    How can you travel from Beijing to Shanghai?

    How long does it take?

    II. Presentation

    Part 1. Talk about the picture. Ask: What can you see? Get the Ss to tell as much as possible. Then say: Today we are going to hear about a long journey. Read the dialogue quickly and find the answer to this question: Why are the people making this journey? (To collect money for a wildlife project to help milu deer.)

    III. Reading

    Now please read the dialogue carefully to find out as much as you can about the journey.( Purpose of Project; How to collect money; where; etc) Ask:

    What is the project?(Collect money for the milu deer project.)

    How are they going to collect the money?

    ( Make a long trip; from Beijing to London.)

    IV. Dialogue

    Play the tape for the Ss to listen and follow. Play it again, this time the Ss listen and repeat. Then let them practice the dialogue in pairs.

    V. Language focus

    Ask the Ss to underline all the questions that the reporter asks. Get the Ss to practise saying the questions, paying attention to the rise-fall intonation pattern.

    VI. Practice

    Part 2. Explain the ask the task very carefully: Now we are going to talk about another project. Look at the notes in Part 2. What’s the purpose of your new project? How are you going to collect the money? How much money do you need for the project? ( Get the Ss to answer the questions.) Okay, I’m a newspaper reporter. I’m going to speak to one of you. (Use the questions in Part 1. with a good student.) Then let the Ss practise in pairs. Make a new dialogue.

    Revise the dialogue in part1.

    Lesson 66 MILU DEER RETURN TO CHINA

    I. Revision:

    1. Check the homework exercises.

    2. Revise the contents of the dialogue in Lesson 65. Ask: Why are they making the journey? Where are they going to?

    3. Get some Ss to retell the story of the bicycle trip.

    II. Presentation:

    Today we are going to read about some milu deer. Before we begin to read, tell me something about deer. Where do they live? What do they like to eat? How big are they? Have you ever seen any deer? Collect the answers. Then say: Some deer live in a zoo. Some live in special parks. Some live in forests. Let’s find out about milu deer.

    III. Reading:

    Go through the questions at the top of the passage and make sure the Ss understand them. Let the Ss read the passage carefully to find the answer(Three centers; set the deer free). Then do Ex 1. Check the answers with the whole class. Deal with any language points.

    1. increase vi. & vt. 增加,增加

    Our difficulties are increasing. (vi.)

    The population has greatly increased these year. (vi.)

    He increased the size of his farm year by year. (vt.)

    Increase n. /’inki:s/ v. /in’kri:s/

    The increase of population will cause social problems.

    2. until/till 一直到……為止 prep. / conj. 作介詞時(shí)后面通常跟名詞構(gòu)成的介詞短語(yǔ),用作時(shí)間狀語(yǔ);做連詞時(shí),引導(dǎo)一個(gè)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句。

    He worked until 4 o’clock this morning.(prep.)

    Let’s wait until the rain stops. (conj.)

    作介詞時(shí)可跟副詞。

    Until then, I know nothing about it.

    2. alive “活著的”、“在世的”叫表語(yǔ)形容詞。只能用作表語(yǔ)的形容詞,不能作定語(yǔ)。

    That fish is still alive.

    那是一條活魚。That is a live fish. 不說(shuō) That is an alive fish.

    類似的表語(yǔ)形容詞有:afraid(害怕的),alone(單獨(dú)的), asleep(睡著地),ashamed(害羞的),他們都不能作定語(yǔ)。

    3.Would like 不表過(guò)去將來(lái),它不是 will的過(guò)去式,而是“想要”的意思。用于禮貌的提出要求或表示愿意提供幫助時(shí)。用于人稱代詞時(shí),縮寫I’d, he’d, she’d等,

    4. at present=now “現(xiàn)在”、“目前” present n. 但前面不用冠詞。

    We don’t need any help at present.

    At present they are living in Wuhan.

    但at the present time=at present 要加冠詞。

    At the present time we do not have any trouble.

    5. since then=since that time(從那時(shí)以后)謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞常用現(xiàn)在完成式。

    His parents returned from abroad in 1986. Since then they have worked in this research center.

    6. the number of / a number of

    the number of “……的數(shù)目”,a number of “許多”

    The number of books in our library is about 30,000.

    A number of books in our library are missing.

    7. It is hoped that…… it 為形式主語(yǔ),真正主語(yǔ)為that-clause

    It is hoped that the fire will be controlled soon.

    It is hoped that they will arrive at the village before dark.

    類似的結(jié)構(gòu)有:

    It is said that….(=Somebody says that….), 據(jù)說(shuō)……

    It is believed that….(=People believe that….), 據(jù)信……

    It is supposed that….(=People suppose that….), 據(jù)認(rèn)為……

    It is reported that….(=Somebody reports that….),據(jù)報(bào)道….

    (Ask the Ss to do some exercises about this pattern.)

    8. set free---to give someone or an animal freedom.釋放

    Some old ladies like to set fish free.

    The slaves were set free.

    IV. Consolidation:

    Tell me about the milu deer. What happened in the Ming and Qing periods? What did the Duke of Bedford do? What is happening now?

    Homework:

    Finnish off the workbook exercises.

    Read the passage again and try to retell the story about milu deer.

    I. Revision:

    1. Check the homework exercises.

    2. Revise the passage in Lesson 66, using WB Lesson 66, Ex. 1. as a guide.

    3. Get some Ss to retell the text about milu deer.

    II. Presentation

    Listen carefully. There are a lot of milu deer in England. Some are being sent to China. In China, the deer is being studied by scientists. More and more deer are being set free year by year. Now I will say the sentences again, please report them.

    III. Language focus:

    Write two of the sentences on the blackboard.

    1. In China, the deer is being studied by scientists.

    2. More milu deer are being moved to a new large nature park.

    That is the form of the Present Continuous Passive (to be + being + past participle)

    IV. Drill:

    Get the Ss to transform active sentences into passive.

    1. They are looking after the deer in three centres.

    2. They are sending more deer to China.

    3. They are setting free many deer.

    V. Practice:

    Part 2. Teach the meaning of report and protect. Do one or two examples with the whole class, then get the Ss to work alone. Let the Ss check the answers in pairs.

    VI. Pairwork

    Part 3. Go through the exercise with the whole class and check that they form the questions correctly. Student A asks the questions. Student B answers. Then change the roles.

    I. Revision:

    2. Ask the Ss to tell about the milu deer.

    II. Preparation for listening

    Page 123. Discuss the picture. Teach the word “antler”(=the horns of the deer). Go through each exercise in turn. Teach the new words in the listening text: male, female, height, grey.

    III. Listening

    Play the tape for each exercise and let the Ss discuss their answers in pairs. Play the tape again if necessary, and then discuss the answers with the whole class.

    IV. Word study

    Part 2. Do the first as an example, then let the Ss work alone. Check the answers with the whole class.

    V. Writing

    Go through Checkpoint 17. Revise the Passive Voice in various tenses. Deal with any language problems that the Ss have.

    VI. Writing:

    Part 3. First, read the instructions to the Ss. Then check the past participles of the verbs given, including the spelling. Let them read through the passage and fill in the gaps, using the correct form of the verbs given.

    VII. Test

    Give the Ss the following test on the Present Continuous Passive Voice.

    Change the following into Active Voice:

    1. The computer lab is being rebuilt.

    2. The old machines are being removed this week.

    3. A new research center is being developed here.

    4. The invitations for the conference are being sent out this week.

    5. Another performance of the play is being organized.

    Change the following into Passive Voice:

    6. They are doing similar research in Chengdu.

    7. They are weighing all the young animals today.

    8. They are taking the passengers to the hotel by bus.

    9. They are discussing the project at a meeting today.
