    Unit 10  The world around us

           Period 1

    Teaching aims:

    1.   Know something about the endangered animals.

    2.   Practice “Question and Answer” after discussion.

    3.   Do listening practice.

    Teaching steps:

    Step1.Lead-in

    Ss tell the reasons why some animals have died out.

    T: We know there are far fewer kinds of animals in the world than before . They have died out for different reasons. Ask several students to tell the reasons. Get Ss to know about the fact that animals have died because of human beings.

    Step 2.Warming up

    1.Ss talk about the three pictures.

    What kinds of animals are they?

    Why are they in danger?

    Why do people hunt them?

    2.Divide the class into groups and discuss the three questions..

    Discussion:

    From the three pictures, what else can we learn?

    Answer:

    The number of the pandas is getting smaller and smaller because there are few areas left where pandas can live and people sometimes kill pandas to sell the fur.

    3.Several groups report their answers

    Step 3.Question and Answer

    From the brief introduction above, we know that many of the world’s animals and in danger. Now please discuss the following questions and give the reasonable answers to them.

    Four students form a group. And then get some of them to give their answers.

    1.   Do you know about any other endangered animals?

    2.   Why is it important to make sure that animals do not die out?

    3.   What can we do to help the endangered animals?

    Step 4.Listening

    One of the reasons why animals are in danger is pollution. Next you will listen to a report about pollution to know how serious it is.

    Let the Ss discuss their answers in pairs and then check them with the whole class.

    Step 5.Speaking

    1.   Help Ss get to know what to do.

    2.   Ss practise asking and answering in pairs. Make sure Ss think of as many questions as possible to see which pair think of most questions.

    3.   The pair which think of most questions act out before the class.

    4.   Interview: Student A will act as the reporter and Students B will act as one of the tigers in Picture One in Warming Up and then practise asking and answering questions.

    Period 2

    Teaching aims:

    1.   Get the Ss to know about why we human beings need to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered.

    2.   The students are trained to improve their reading ability and comprehension.

    Teaching steps:

    Step1. Pre-reading

    T: Today we’re going to read about animals and plants as well as us human beings. Here are some questions before reading the text and discuss them with your partner.

    4 questions on page 66

    Step2 Fast reading

    Read the text as quickly as possible and try to decide which of the following sentence is true.

    1.   We live a longer life, we can not harm other living things.( )

    2.   It is too late for us take measures to keep animals and plants from dying out.( )

    3.   We can help to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered by creating more room for living things.( )

    Step3 Detailed reading

    Read the text carefully and try to ask and answer the following questions in pairs.

    1/ What must we do if we want to live a better life?

    2/ What’s the good environment for animals to live in?

    3/ Why do animals and plants become endangered?

    4/ What can we do to protect animals and plants from being endangered?

    5/ A species can become endangered when its habitat is changed or destroyed. Can you think of things human beings do that may destroy or cause changes in a habitat?

    Step4 Listening

    Play the tape of the text for the students to listen to. Get them to pay much attention to the pronunciation, stress and intonation. Get the Ss to read the text aloud.

    Step5 Language points: 

    1.cut down “砍倒,縮減,使喪失生命或健康”

    He cut down the dead apple tree.

    It was a pity that he was cut down by SARS in his forties.

    2.   keep sb./sth. from doing sth. 阻止……做……。其中 from 不能省略。

    注:stop / prevent sb/sth from doing sth. 其中from可以省略,但用于被動不能省。Eg.

    The heavy rain kept us from finishing our work on time.

    你最好阻止你的兒子吸煙。

    It is the best way to prevent such a thing happening again.

    這是最好的方法,來阻止這樣的事情再次發生。

    They have done their best to stop children going to that kind of place.

    他們已盡力阻止孩子們到那樣的地方去。

    3.   Many of the earth’ plants and animals have already died out..

    “die out” 滅絕,逐漸消失,漸漸止息。

     The fire died out.火滅了。

     This kind of bird is dying out. 這種鳥逐漸絕種。

    4.   If we know more about what causes endangerment, we may be able to take measures before it is too late.

    假如我們多了解一點關于我們面臨危險的原因,也許我們還來得及能夠采取措施. “take measures”同“ take steps” 采取措施

    take measures/steps to do sth. 采取措施干某事

    We should take measures to protect our environment.

    take one’s measure 給某人量尺寸,估量某人的品格、能力等。 

    5.live a better life live a ……life “過著……的生活”

    6.The animal or plant has to either adapt to the change or find a new home.

    動植物要么適應變化要么找個新家。

     “adapt to”適應

    The animal has adapted to its new environment.

    We should try to adapt the children to the new studying conditions.

    Period 3

    Integrating skills

    Teaching aims:

    1.   Let the students learn more about the protection of environment by reading and writing.

    2.   Try to develop the integrating skills of the students, especially reading and writing.

    3.   Let the Ss know what the recycling is.

    Teaching steps:

    Step1. Reading

    Read the short passage carefully and try to get the main idea.

    Recycling is very important for living things.

    Step2. Discussion

    Work in groups of four and talk about how to recycle energy and water.

    Step3. Practice

    Deal with the practice at Page 69. Encourage the Ss to use their head, working at the practice.

    Step4. Writing

    Read the information at Page70 and do as follows.

    1.   Go over the requirements for Writing at Page70 and make sure the Ss know what to do.

    2.   Tell the Ss what they should do before writing.

    3.   Get the Ss to write a poster with the given information.

    Step5. Language points:

    1.   Human beings often throw away things they have used only once.

    人類經常扔掉他們僅僅使用過一次的東西。

    “throw away”扔掉,拋棄;錯過,不利用。

    Don’t throw those magazines away. I haven’t read them yet.

    This is your last chance, don’t throw it away.

    2.   Reduce the amount of rubbish. 減少垃圾量。
