Dear Chris,
As a history lover, many influential historic figures are engraved in my mind. But what comes to my mind is Confucius.
Confucius, also known as Kong Qiu, was a Chinese philosopher and politician who lived during the Spring and Autumn period. He is widely considered one of the most important figures in Chinese history and his teachings have had a profound impact on Chinese culture and society. Confucius believed in the importance of education, morality, and social order.
He emphasized the importance of respect for elders, loyalty to family, and the pursuit of knowledge. His teachings were compiled into a book called the Analects, which has been studied and revered for centuries. Confucius influence can still be seen in modern Chinese society, where his teachings continue to be studied and applied in daily life.

Qin Shi Huangdi, First Chinese Emperor
A ruler from the western state of Qin united and subjugated the Warring States and formed China in 221 B.C. He declared himself the first emperor of China and named himself Shi Huangdi (meaning First Emperor).
During the Qin (Chin) Dynasty (221 B.C. - 206 B.C.), the emperor connected and extended the old fortification walls along the north of China that originated about 700 B.C. (over 2500 years ago), forming the Great Wall of China to stop invading barbarians from the north.
The Emperor standardized Chinese writing, bureaucracy, scholarship, law, currency, weights and measures. He expanded the Chinese empire, built a capital in Xian, a system of roads, and massive fortifications and palaces.
Shi Huangdi (259-210 B.C.) was a cruel ruler who readily killed or banished those who opposed him or his ideas. He is notorious for burning virtually all the books that remained from previous regimes. He even banned scholarly discussions of the past.
The Qin dynasty ended soon after his death, but a unified China remained for over 2,000 years. Chinas name is derived from his short but seminal dynasty, Qin (pronounced Chin).

As for my favourite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinker in the late Qing Dynasty. He, in his book, Haiguo Tuzhi (Maps and Records of the World), introduced modern technologies and ideas to China. That opened our eyes to the world. In fact, he inspires me to major in English in college to be a bridge between China and the world.

Last week we had a discussion about whether we still need Confucian thought in modern society. About 60% of the students in my class think it necessary to study Confucian thought. For one thing, more and more people in different countries are bursting to study it, showing that it is still treasured in the world. For another, Confucian thought is believed to have made great contributions to the peace of human beings.
But every coin has two sides. About 40% of the students in my class insist Confucian thought is outdated. In a way it limits the development of the world.
Different people have different opinions. I think Confucian thought still has some positive effects on our society.

Upon graduation，virtually all college students will confront the problem of the career choice. It is truly a tough choice. Students’ opinions differ greatly on this issue. Some hold that priority should be given to their interest in jobs，but others take the attitude that salary is the most critical factor influencing their career choices.
As to myself，I prefer the latter view. A well paid job exerts a tremendous fascination on a great number of people，with no exception to me. Although it might be impossible to measure the value of one’s job in terms of money，salary counts most when I choose my future career. In my view，our career choices largely depend on how and where we have been brought up. I come from a poor urban family and my parents were both laid off workers. In order to finance my tuition，they have been working hard over the past four years. As the only son in my family，I have to shoulder the burden of supporting my family. In short，salary is the first and only consideration in my choice of career.
